Stock market today: Wall Street ends lower, closes out first losing month since February

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 07:36:48 GMT

By DAMIAN J. TROISE and ALEX VEIGA (AP Business Writers)A late-afternoon fade left stocks modestly lower Thursday as Wall Street closed out its first losing month since February. The S&P 500 gave up an early gain to close 0.2% lower. The benchmark index ended August down 1.8%, though a four-day winning streak going back to last week helped chip away at the severity of the monthly decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5%, while the Nasdaq composite eked out a 0.1% gain.Market jitters over the possibility that the Federal Reserve might have to keep interest rates higher for longer following reports showing the U.S. economy remains remarkably resilient led to the market’s pullback in August after what had been a banner year. This week, reports on job openings, consumer confidence and inflation stoked hopes on Wall Street that the Fed may hold rates steady at its next policy meeting in September. That helped limit the market’s losses for August. The S&P 50...

White House asks Congress to pass short-term funding bill to keep government operating

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 07:36:48 GMT

By JOSH BOAK (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Thursday that Congress should pass a short-term funding measure to ensure the government keeps operating after the current budget year ends Sept. 30.An official with the Office of Management and Budget said lawmakers would very likely need to pass a temporary spending measure in September to prevent a potential partial shutdown. The official was not authorized to discuss the administration’s plans and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Without such congressional approval, parts of the federal government could shut down when the new budget year begins Oct. 1. That would jeopardize federal programs on which millions of U.S. households and businesses rely. The shutdown is a risk because of disagreements on the annual spending bills to be passed by the Republican-led House and and Democratic-majority Senate. Neither side wants a shutdown despite their differences.House Republicans are...

L.A. City Council seeks lawsuit over bussing of migrants from Texas

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 07:36:48 GMT

Los Angeles City Council leaders filed two separate motions on Wednesday pushing for legal action against Texas and Gov. Greg Abbott over the busing of migrants to the region. A total of 11 buses carrying asylum seekers have arrived in L.A. since June, with the latest getting to Union Station on Wednesday. The last bus carried 35 asylum seekers from Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Venezuela and even Russia. The council members voted unanimously on both motions, with one calling for a probe investigating whether Abbott’s actions violated any criminal laws, like kidnapping and human trafficking. Some council leaders argue many families traveled on lengthy bus rides with little or no food and water."The message is clear that the city of Los Angeles will not accept this kind of behavior," Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez said. "The governors are doing this for political points and that’s unacceptable. You cannot be playing with people’s lives in that way, and so if they did something unlawful, w...

Former Cal QB and Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor will be coaching an FBS team for the first time after taking over for David Shaw, who resigned after 12 seasons at Stanford.“I’ve coached at almost every level and played at all of them, and they’re really all the same once you start,” Taylor said. “The players are a little bigger and a little faster but you get nervous just like any other game, and then typically once you get started the nerves kind of go away and it becomes another game.“Once you get into the game I’m really focused on being a play caller and strategy and moving the ball an...

3 cocktail recipes that celebrate California dry vermouth

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 07:36:48 GMT

Somewhere deep in the recesses of your kitchen liquor cabinet probably sits a bottle of dry vermouth. You know it’s there, but you really have no idea how long it’s been there. Maybe your uncle or a date wanted dry martinis, and you bought it because you confused dry gin with dry vermouth. Or maybe you knew exactly what you were doing and wanted actual vermouth in your martini, a rarity these days. Whatever the case, you opened it way back when and now, there it sits. We’re not talking about the sweet, red stuff, although ever since Carpano Antica upped the game in sweet vermouth quality back in the late 1990s, new, high-quality sweet vermouths have begun appearing on the market, ready to elevate your Manhattan and Negroni game. (And we’re not talking about bianco vermouth, either, which in many cases is simply uncolored sweet vermouth.)Dry or French vermouth is the other kind of vermouth — and it has always had a problem. The main difference between the sweet and d...

San Jose City Hall will be lowrider central to celebrate anniversary

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 07:36:48 GMT

The last “No Cruising” sign was removed from in front of San Jose City Hall one year ago by former Councilmember Raul Peralez, bringing a symbolic end to the decades-long ban. At the time, lowriders and other customized classic cars filled city hall’s plaza as car clubs celebrated the historic moment. And, they are doing it again.Look for more than 300 of those cars to be back on the plaza Friday for the first San Jose Lowrider Day, as more than 60 car clubs join Councilmembers Omar Torres and Peter Ortiz and Mayor Matt Mahan and United Lowrider Council President David Polcano to celebrate the anniversary. The festivities are set to last from 1 to 5 p.m., but you can expect cars to arrive earlier and leave later — maybe to hang for a cruise down Santa Clara Street or Story Road. The cruising ban was enacted in 1986 by the city council, which cited traffic congestion and the impeding of emergency vehicles on Santa Clara Street, Story Road and King Road. There we...
