Italian and French right-wing leaders Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen hoped to lay the groundwork for a right-to-far-right majority for the European Union in a meeting Monday. But mainstream conservatives in Brussels had other ideas. With less than a year to go until the European elections, speculation is mounting that the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) could build new alliances with fledgling right-wing groups in the newly formed European Parliament. This could potentially end its decades-old coalition with the center-left Socialists and Democrats.Salvini, who leads Italy’s populist League party, offered to act as a middleman between the EPP and the far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) grouping, to which his party belongs. “Salvini reiterated his determination to build a common home for the center-right alternative to socialists, without vetoes,” wrote the League in a readout of the meeting with Le Pen. “I want to unite the whole center-right, the unity of our po...Lupica: Leon Rose opened the Knicks’ window; now he’s on the clock before it closes

Leon Rose became president of the basketball operation at Madison Square Garden a little over three years ago, March of 2020. In that time, Rose has done a lot, mostly because the Knicks have come back from being on the wrong side of the clown line in the NBA. They have finished fourth in the Eastern Conference and finished fifth, and won just the team’s second playoff series – wait for it – in this century. It’s a lot. Just not enough. There has to be some urgency now for Rose, as patient an executive as he obviously likes being, if not as much as he likes being the New York City sports executive that the media can’t find. As crazy as this sounds, just because of the joke the Knicks had become over the two decades before Rose got to the Garden, getting the Knicks this far is the easy part compared to what comes next:Moving up from the middle of the pack in the conference to the top of it.To do that, Rose still needs a star. By NASSER NASSER and JOSEF FEDERMAN (Associated Press)JENIN, West Bank (AP) — Israel on Monday launched its most intense military operation in the occupied West Bank in nearly two decades, carrying out a series of drone strikes and sending hundreds of troops on an open-ended mission into a militant stronghold. At least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded. The crackdown was reminiscent of Israeli military tactics during the second Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s and came at a time of growing domestic pressure for a tough response to recent attacks on Israeli settlers, including a shooting last month that killed four Israelis. The operation took place in the Jenin refugee camp — an area in the northern West Bank that has long been known as a bastion of militants. The fighting, which began shortly after midnight, continued past nightfall.Throughout the day, black smoke rose from the crowded streets of the camp, a densely populated neighborhood that is ho...Massachusetts State Police seize 64 packages of fireworks, arrest Springfield man ahead of 4th of July

By TERRY TANG (Associated Press)PHOENIX (AP) — On the Friday before the Fourth of July, more than a dozen dog owners waited in triple-digit temperatures in south Phoenix to get into a microchipping event inside a shelter. It didn’t hurt that Maricopa County was offering a discount. But, several were there because they knew having a microchip with their contact information implanted in their pups would increase the likelihood of their pet being returned if the worst happens on Independence Day. “Ava’s a scaredy-cat of any loud noises,” said Rori Chang, who was there with her golden retriever. “Her immediate reaction is to hide in corners and after that, she will literally paw at you wanting you to pet her the whole time.” Most of the U.S. may be looking forward to Tuesday for dazzling displays of fireworks or setting off firecrackers and poppers with their neighbors.
