LONDON — U.K. government figures say they would privately welcome Qatari investment into Manchester United, as the club’s owners consider a £4 billion bid from a member of the Middle East state’s ruling class.A senior U.K. trade envoy told POLITICO that Britain should “absolutely be embracing foreign investment into this country from the Middle East, whether it’s in football or green energy,” when asked about the potential sale of one of the world’s most famous football clubs into Qatari ownership.Another key U.K. government figure, a minister with a close interest in the proposed deal, said the bid by Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani — the chairman of the Qatari Islamic Bank — would be “good investment” if it came with assurances that the wider community would benefit. Both senior figures were speaking on condition of anonymity. The great EU subsidy shakedown

BRUSSELS — Will it ever be enough? Brussels officials are growing increasingly exasperated with businesses demanding more state cash, and threatening — if they don’t get it — to quit Europe and relocate to America. “These demands just keep on coming,” said one frustrated EU diplomat. “Sometimes we genuinely wonder: Are they legitimate concerns or are companies just seizing on the moment and testing how far they can go?”The first problem is that U.S. President Joe Biden has used a vast package of government subsidies under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to tempt many big European industrial players — like VW and battery supplier Northvolt — into considering a shift in operations to the U.S.The second problem is how the EU has responded to the first. Amid fears that European industry is facing existential decline, the Brussels fightback against Biden’s reforms involves more leeway for EU countries to pour more state aid into their economies and targets fo...

Lonzo Ball will undergo a third surgical procedure in an attempt to resolve the pain and discomfort in his left knee that has kept him off the court for the majority of his first two seasons with the Chicago Bulls.Ball will undergo a cartilage transplant this month and then begin a lengthy recovery process. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The prosecutor’s office charged Officers Erik Smith, Jake Bartolome and Robert Lewis each with one felony count for hindering prosecution and another felony count for conspiracy. As WGN TV celebrates 75 years, we’re looking back with a series of stories on the history and the memories. The Chicago Bulls of the 1990s were a worldwide phenomenon, a source of civic pride, and the highest-rated show on WGN-TV, at the time.  “You want to talk about 'Must See TV?,'” said Bob Vorwald, who oversaw WGN Sports as the director of production. “You just had to watch WGN to see Michael and the Bulls.”It was the pinnacle of a partnership between the Bulls and WGN that spanned over parts of six decades. WGN broadcasted Bulls games beginning in the team’s expansion season in 1966.  Jack Brickhouse served as the play-by-play announcer.  In 1979, Bob Costas, who became a household name as the host of NBC’s Olympics coverage, and an announcer who handled network baseball games, Super Bowls, and the NBA Finals (including calling Michael Jordan’s final shot as a Bulls player), was the play-by-play for the Bulls on WGN.“WGN and the Bulls had sort of an on-again, off-...

Even though funding has increased in the federal budget allocation, pediatric cancer doctors and researchers say there’s plenty of room to grow. There are also key opportunities to help improve quality of life for patients as they grow into adulthood. For Joey Clark it all started with a swollen lymph node in his neck that antibiotics didn’t help. The 8th grader who love cross country said he struggled to run.“I could barely run two miles and I was saying, ‘Man, something’s wrong,’” he said.He found he could no longer keep up as his body started to slow down.“(He was) losing weight. (He was) pale, kinda green tone,” Joey’s father Mike Clark said.“We saw four different doctors before finally somebody said, ‘Oh there’s something wrong,’” Joey’s mother Angel Clark said.A trip to the emergency room and blood work offered some clues.“The doctor said, ‘Do you know what lymphoma is?” Mike Clark said.“It was terrifying to be honest,” Joey Clark said. “13-years-old, hearing that you have cance...
